About Us

Welcome to:

The Art Shop Skipton

Pablo Picasso once said: “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.”

Art has the ability to make reality seem even more real, and the unusual and fantastic seem ordinary. Art can act as therapy, channel expression and become an outlet for every feeling and emotion under the sun – that’s why we think art is for everybody.

We curate the finest, most affordable art supplies on the market, so anyone can pick up a brush, a pencil, a pen or marker start creating.

Yorkshire is becoming the next capital of creativity, with the buzzing metropolis of Leeds, the sprawling wonderland of the Yorkshire Sculpture Park and the rural charm of the countryside waiting to be explored. We’re happy to be a part of this exciting artistic movement from our home in Skipton.

Idyllic Skipton

Our shop in Skipton was founded in 1996, but selling art supplies has been in the family as far back as 1919.

This heritage of knowledge has been passed on through generations, with the ethos of exploration and discovery put at the heart of our business ever since.

Whether you’re a budding amateur, seasoned professional or getting back into the creative swing of things, you’ll find everything you’ll need from the likes of Winsor & Newton, Daler Rowney, Derwent, Pebeo, Sennelier, Unison, Bockingford, Loxley, Uni, Reeves, Artmaster, Hahnemuhle, Koh-I-Noor, Fila Lyra and many more premium brands.

We also stock a specially-curated collection of craft materials, so if you’re into collage, glazing, making furniture, working with fabrics or creating jewellery – we can help.

Selling art supplies online

Four years ago, we took the next step on our journey and began selling online for the first time.

No longer was our service, expertise and specially curated range limited to North Yorkshire – the whole of the UK could metaphorically wander around our shop and discover something new.

We pride ourselves on being a space people can discover new techniques and new materials. All of our staff were chosen for their passion for creativity, so they can advise customers on making the right choices on everything from watercolour paper to oil paint.

Advice isn’t limited to physical visits either – look out for our individual staff recommendations around our website. We know people don’t want to wait around when inspiration strikes, so all of our orders are packaged up and sent in no time. Customers can even order items and collect them in store.

Learning is a huge part of our ethos at The Art Shop Skipton. We attend many events over the year to help promote and educate anyone who’s interested in getting involved with art.

Our partnerships with manufacturers like Pebeo, Derwent and Daler Rowney allow us to offer free workshops and demos, so we can teach people about new techniques and tools.

Shop assistant

As a graduate of Nottingham Trent University School of Art and Design and published illustrator, Al has a real expert knowledge in all things creative.

His charming illustrations have graced the pages of several children’s books, but when he’s not creating characters or imaginative scenes with his pen, he’s helping our customers find exactly what they need.

Al’s keen interest in art comes in handy when he’s helping people find what they are looking for, whether it’s a versatile pen, a reliable brush or a beautiful new easel. He’s also a master of framing pictures, so he can display your latest work in the most elegant way possible.

Online sales administrator

Amy is the proud owner of a degree in Scientific and Natural History Illustration, and has an impeccable ability to craft realistic images of animals and nature.

Born in and raised up in drizzly Salford, Amy moved to green pastures of West Yorkshire in 2015. Here she continues to find inspiration for her watercolour illustrations and prints among the lush greenery and wildlife.

When she’s not exploring the natural world, Amy is our online sales administrator, helping our online customers get the absolute best from their online orders and answering questions about our extensive range over email.

Dispatch Manager

Born and raised in the market town of Skipton, North Yorkshire, Chloe has been helping to grow The Art Shop Skipton for over four years.

Starting as a shop assistant, Chloe is now our dispatch manager and spends her time making sure every single customer receives what they wanted promptly, and in perfect condition.

She’s passionate about customer service and making sure each individual who shops with us has a brilliant experience. When she’s not being our organisational dynamo, Chloe can be found exploring the alluring Yorkshire countryside and taking part in a range of different sports.

Online operations manager

As the online operations manager, Jonny’s the driving force behind all of the digital activity for The Art Shop Skipton. He studied IT and Business, and spent much of his adolescent and adult years at the shop, fervently learning and experimenting with all the art supplies on sale.

Jonny is the latest in a long line of artists and art material retailers, continuing to invest in the local creative community.

When he’s not making managing the website, attending local creative events or helping customers select the right tools, you’ll probably find him taking photos and exploring the picturesque Yorkshire countryside.

Company Owner

As the owner and founder of The Art Shop Skipton, it’s no surprise Mark comes from a long line of artists. His father and grandfather were both well known local artists in nearby Ilkley.

Mark used this heritage of creativity to found The Art Shop Skipton, an institution that has been proudly supplying artists for over 20 years. He passed on this passion for the arts to his son, Jonny, who is taking the business into the 21st century as the Online Operations Manager.

His deep knowledge of every type of art tool imaginable has helped Mark curate the finest brands and products on the market. He’s also been a professional picture framer for over 38 years.

Store Manager

Naomi is The Art Shop Skipton’s in-store retail superstar. With over 15 years expertise Naomi really knows the shop keeping ropes.

After a fast-paced stint as a holiday rep Naomi decided a more tranquil life in her home town of Skipton was calling her. Embarking on a career in retail she quickly worked her way up to management level.

Customers and The Art Shop Skipton team alike are now lucky enough to experience Naomi’s unparalleled retail know how, impeccable service and product knowledge.

In her spare time, she likes to spend quality time with her children, family and of course walking their black and white spaniel Snoopy.

Accounts

With 40 years experience in the secretarial and accounting world June is The Art Shop’s very own accounting expert. Before joining the team, she ran her very own successful book keeping business. So, when it comes to all things numbers we always know who to rely on.

June loves to see the world too. Born in Bedfordshire before moving north to Lancashire and then across the border to Yorkshire she now does a lot of her exploration by train. She has been on some amazing adventures such as the Trans-Siberian railway and other journeys across Europe, Canada and America to name just a few.

Shop assistant

Before a well earned semi-retirement, Tony had an extensive career in marketing and an action packed stint as a professional racing car driver. He moved from the south to find a new home in idyllic North Yorkshire.

As he approaches his golden years, Tony was drawn to The Art Shop Skipton due to his love of art in all it’s forms.

Since becoming a shop assistant, Tony has been inspired to learn stone carving and create art using oil paints. When he’s not exploring his new-found passion, Tony spends his time discovering and walking the spectacular hills of Yorkshire.
