Mahl sticks (also known as painters sticks or painters rests) provides stable support for your hand or wrist when painting on a large scale or with slow drying mediums such as oils. By resting the leather cork end of the stick on the edge of the canvas or on a part already dry, you can then rest your working hand on the stick while moving the stick with your non-dominant hand as needed.
This not only prevents smudging your work but it can assist in creating a steadier brush stroke.
